Generic Megace ES

There are currently patents in place that prevent a company from making a generic Megace ES (megestrol ES) product. This may change, however, after the first patent expires in September 2020. Although there are no generic products for this extra-strength version of Megace, there are generic versions of regular-strength Megace. These generics are available as tablets and an oral liquid.

Can I Buy Generic Megace ES?

Megace® ES (megestrol ES) is a prescription medication used to stimulate appetite in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who have had a significant weight loss. It belongs to a group of medicines known as progestins.
Megace ES is made by Par Pharmaceutical, Inc. It is protected by patents that prevent any generic Megace ES from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Megace ES is set to expire in September 2020. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for new Megace ES uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Megace ES drug.

Is Megestrol Acetate a Generic Megace ES?

No -- megestrol acetate is the active ingredient in Megace ES (as well as in regular Megace), but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
