How Does It Work?
belongs to a class of medicines known as progestins. It is related to the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. In clinical studies, Megace
ES was shown to stimulate appetite and cause weight gain. It is unknown how the medication works to cause these actions. However, it can be used to treat weight loss because of these side effects.
Is It Safe for Children to Use Megace ES?
This medication is not approved for use in children (usually defined as individuals younger than 18 years of age), as it has not been adequately studied in children. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Megace ES in children.
Can Older Adults Use It?
There were not enough older adults in Megace ES clinical studies to determine if older adults respond differently to the drug than younger age groups. Megace ES is removed from the body by the kidneys. Because older adults are more likely to have reduced kidney function, it may take longer for the drug to leave the body, which could increase the risk for Megace ES side effects
. In general, older adults may need to start with lower Megace ES doses
Off-Label Uses for Megace ES
On occasion, a healthcare provider may recommend Megace ES for something other than the officially approved uses. This is called an "off-label
" use. Some off-label uses for Megace ES may include the treatment of:
- Cancer-related loss of appetite or other cancer symptoms
- Malnutrition or weight loss in people who do not have AIDS
- Hot flashes in men with prostate cancer.
