Nevirapine XR (
Viramune® XR™) is a prescription medicine used as a treatment for human immunodeficiency virus (
HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (
AIDS). It is a long-acting, extended-release medication that is taken just once a day.
Nevirapine XR should not be used by itself; it is approved for use only in combination with other HIV medications.
Just like any medicine, nevirapine XR may cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
