Rimantadine

What If I Take an Overdose?

Based on what is known about overdose symptoms with amantadine (Symmetrel®), a very similar medication, people who take too much rimantadine may have overdose symptoms that could include:

  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • An irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Death.

If you happen to overdose on this drug, seek medical attention immediately.

Keep this and all other medications out of the reach of children.

What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose of Rimantadine?

If you miss a dose of rimantadine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular schedule. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as directed. Do not take a double dose.

Is There a Generic Version of Rimantadine?

Currently, generic rimantadine tablets are available (see Generic Flumadine).

Who Makes Rimantadine?

Brand-name rimantadine is manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Generic versions are made by various manufacturers.

Available Strengths

Rimantadine is available in 100-mg tablets. At one point, rimantadine syrup was available, although it has since been discontinued by the manufacturer. Your pharmacist can make an oral suspension (liquid) using the tablets. If made in the "official" way, this suspension provides 10 mg of rimantadine per mL. It is good for 14 days after being made and should be stored at room temperature.
