Another area of smallpox research is the improvement of smallpox treatment options. Researchers have evaluated more than 500 compounds against smallpox and related viruses. Currently, scientists involved with smallpox research are testing at least 3 antiviral drugs against smallpox and determining whether existing antiviral compounds and those being developed are effective against variola virus.
