Acyclovir (Zovirax) Cream

The cream form of acyclovir (Zovirax®) is used to treat cold sores in adults and children age 12 and older. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and this drug works by preventing the virus from multiplying. In clinical studies, people who used the cream at the first signs of an outbreak had cold sores that healed half a day sooner, compared to people who did not use this product.

When using acyclovir cream, make sure you apply it to the lips and face only. Do not apply it inside the nose or mouth. If you apply this product with bare hands, wash your hands thoroughly afterward. If desired, you can wear disposable rubber or latex gloves to apply it, which can help prevent the spread of infection.
