Information on Zovirax Ointment

Healthcare providers can recommend Zovirax® ointment (acyclovir ointment) for the treatment of:

  • An initial genital herpes infection (but not for subsequent outbreaks) in people with normal immune systems
  • Non-life-threatening genital herpes or cold sores in people with weakened immune systems (such as those with HIV or AIDS).

This medication works by preventing the virus that causes genital herpes and cold sores from multiplying. However, Zovirax ointment is not a cure, and future outbreaks are possible.

You should use disposable rubber, latex, or similar gloves to apply Zovirax ointment in order to prevent spreading the infection to other parts of your body. In addition, before beginning treatment, review the drug's safety information with your healthcare provider so that you are aware of possible side effects and drug interactions.
