Megace ES Drug Information

Adults who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and have experienced significant weight loss may receive treatment with Megace® ES (megestrol ES). This product comes as a liquid that is taken by mouth once a day. It is an extra-strength version of regular Megace, meaning Megace ES contains more of the active ingredient per mL than regular Megace.

Megace ES is a synthetic (laboratory-made) progestin, a form of the human hormone progesterone. Although it is not exactly clear how Megace ES works, clinical studies have shown that people with AIDS-related anorexia had an increased appetite and were able to gain weight while taking it.

Prior to taking Megace ES, make sure to review the drug's safety information with your healthcare provider. While many people tolerate this medication well, it is not appropriate for everyone. For example, you may not be able to use this medicine if you are pregnant, have certain allergies, or are taking certain medications.
