Rimantadine Hydrochloride (HCL)

Available by prescription only, rimantadine hydrochloride (HCl) is a flu medication that is sold under the brand name Flumadine®. Specifically, this drug is used to:

  • Prevent the flu in adults and children one year of age and older (such as during flu outbreaks)
  • Treat the flu in adults and adolescents age 16 years and older to help shorten the duration of symptoms.

Rimantadine comes in the form of a tablet and is usually taken once or twice a day. Your specific dosage will depend on whether you are taking it to treat or prevent the flu, your kidney function, your age, and other factors. When used to treat the flu, rimantadine works better the sooner it is started. For best results, it should be started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
