Generic Zovirax Ointment
Generic versions of Zovirax ointment (acyclovir ointment) are available. These products are available in a single strength, in a 15- or 30-gram tube. The FDA has determined that the generic medication is equivalent to brand-name Zovirax ointment. However, the generic versions may have different inactive ingredients, which may cause problems for some people.
Generic Zovirax Ointment: An IntroductionZovirax® ointment (acyclovir ointment) is a prescription antiviral medication approved for the following uses:
- Treatment of an initial genital herpes infection (but not for subsequent outbreaks) in people with normal immune systems
- Treatment of non-life-threatening genital herpes or cold sores in people with weakened immune systems (such as those with HIV or AIDS).
Zovirax ointment is made by GlaxoSmithKline for Valeant Pharmaceuticals North America LLC. It is also available in generic form.
Availability of Generic Zovirax OintmentGeneric Zovirax ointment is available in one strength (5%) in 15- and 30-gram tubes. At this time, this product is made by various manufacturers, such as:
- Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
- Oceanside Pharmaceuticals.
All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic Zovirax ointment versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to the brand-name product.
